An external advisory board (EAB) consisting of both researchers and the users of research provides external guidance which complements the expertise of the Center researchers. The EAB members will: 1) review study implementation; 2) provide technical assistance on design, implementation, analysis, and interpretation of the studies; 3) review study findings and implications; 4) advise on dissemination of results into the real world of drug abuse service delivery; and 5) advise on research direction and collaboration with other institutions.

Despite many advances in research, study findings are not making the intended impact of improving drug abuse service delivery in this country. In support of the great need and value in enhancing the collaborative relationship between the research community and other stakeholders in substance abuse service delivery, the EAB not only includes prominent representatives of the substance abuse research community, but also represents the perspectives of other stakeholders in the delivery of services in a managed care environment: providers, payers, managed care organizations, community groups, and communications experts. The EAB's goal will be to increase the likelihood that rigorous research findings have practical application in service delivery and are shared outside the research arena.
